TuneZest's Top 100 Tracks of 2024 - Spotify Wrapped
The long-awaited day is finally here—Happy Spotify Wrapped Day, everyone!
This year's wait has felt longer than ever, and I know many of you, myself included, have faced some frustration. Wrapped was released later than in previous years, with minimal updates from Spotify about its release date. But at last, it’s here! I’m excited to share my Top 100 playlist with you all, along with my highlights and reflections on how my listening habits have shaped up this year.
It’s clear that my music choices this year have been fueled by nostalgia, pop princess anthems, and a whole lot of repeat plays from previous years. Chappell Roan dominated my playlist with a whopping nine entries. This is especially impressive considering her relatively small catalog of 15 major releases, spanning The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and her standout single, “Good Luck Babe,” which claimed my top spot. For me, her music soundtracked some of the year’s best moments—club nights with friends, living room dance parties, and car ride sing-alongs. Chappell’s rise has been phenomenal this year, with appearances on massive festival stages and a hugely successful tour. I confidently crown her the Queen of Pop for 2024. With new tracks already teased on tour and on SNL, I can’t wait to see what next year holds for this rising star.
Charli XCX also made a strong showing on my playlist, thanks to her hugely successful album, Brat. This album lived up to the hype, bringing something fresh and unique to mainstream pop while giving dance music a much-needed reinvention. Since its release, it’s been my go-to for a mood boost or an impromptu boogie. It’s the kind of album that never fails to energize and inspire.
Taking the top spot as my Artist of the Year was none other than the iconic and unreplicable Talking Heads. This band holds a special place in my heart, particularly with tracks like “Heaven” and “This Must Be the Place.” These songs have been my emotional anchors, helping me process complicated feelings and offering a deep sense of understanding and comfort. They’ve been a constant companion during tough times this year. A standout moment was the collaboration between David Byrne and Paramore, with Paramore covering “Burning Down the House” and Byrne delivering his own take on “Hard Times.” This unexpected pairing turned out to be a perfect match, proving just how complementary their artistry is.
My playlist also featured several unexpected (but not unwelcome) entries. Notable surprises included “Sway” by Michael Bublé, “Beast of Burden” by The Rolling Stones, “Animals” by Nickelback, “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder, “Disconnected” by Veruca Salt, “Egg” by Mr. Bungle, and “Lingus” by Snarky Puppy. These tracks often played during my work commutes, setting the tone for my day and helping me wind down afterward. Each brought its own unique vibe, making them perfect companions for the road.
Ultimately, I think my Top Tracks speak for themselves—judge me however you like! Each and every song has brought me joy and comfort over the past year, and I hope your Wrapped playlists have done the same for you.
